Victor Lindelof was hit by an object thrown from the crowd in Saturday's FA Cup final as Manchester United celebrated their equaliser against Manchester City, only to go on and lose 2-1.

City captain Ilkay Gundogan's brace sandwiched a first-half penalty from Bruno Fernandes, with the German's first goal the fastest in FA Cup final history at 13 seconds.

United did well to respond before half-time, although the penalty awarded to the Red Devils was incredibly controversial. Jack Grealish was penalised for handball but looked to have his arms in a natural position.

However, Pep Guardiola's side retook the lead early in the second half through Gundogan and managed to hold on to secure the club's seventh FA Cup and keep their treble dreams alive.

There were ugly scenes though before half-time as it appeared that United defender Lindelof was hit in the face by a green object thrown from the section of the stadium containing City fans, in front of whom United celebrated their equaliser.

Speaking on commentary for the BBC, former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas said of the incident: "Something's been thrown and it's hit Lindelof, you don't want to see that. We've got a brilliant game on our hands here, it's the last thing you want to see."

Former Red Devils goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel added: "That is so wrong. That's bad. I'm not blaming Manchester City - it is somebody - but we are at the Manchester City end, they were celebrating in front of the Manchester City supporters, and they should be big enough, they're winning enough, to understand it's okay to go 1-1.

"They shouldn't react like that. That is terrible, it should have consequences. I hope they find the guy, whoever did that."

United players will now go on holiday with their season concluded whilst City have one final match as they travel to Istanbul to take on Inter Milan in the Champions League final next Saturday, looking to lift Europe's elite prize for the first time whilst becoming the second team ever to win a treble.
