Trent Alexander-Arnold called the 'best English midfielder' by Dean Saunders

Trent Alexander-Arnold called the 'best English midfielder' by Dean Saunders

Trent Alexander-Arnold starred in midfield for England.

Dean Saunders believes Trent Alexander-Arnold is the 'best English midfielder' following his displays for England against Malta and North Macedonia.

Alexander-Arnold starred as England beat Malta and North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifiers last month.

He operated in the middle of the park and excelled as the Three Lions beat Malta 4-0 and thrashed North Macedonia 7-0 at Old Trafford.

The Liverpool star scored in his national team's win in Malta as he delivered a sensational outing in midfield.

Following his recent outings in midfield, talkSPORT pundit Saunders reckons the 24-year-old is the 'best English midfielder'.

He also claimed he can do everything that Declan Rice does and told Jurgen Klopp to buy a right-back this summer, so he can use Alexander-Arnold in midfield for the new season.

Naturally, Saunders' bold claim sent social media wild as fans didn't agree with his comments.

One Twitter user wrote: "He’s not better than Bellingham or Rice absolutely not a chance."

A second tweeted: "Playing in midfield against Macedonia is slightly different to playing there against Spain or France. Let alone City!!"

A third added: "Love Trent as a player England's best passer of the ball but 'he could do everything Rice does' what cut out danger, tackle as good as him and power through from midfield... ok."

A fourth said: "No he cannot! Yes he’s a great passer but he can’t do half the things Rice does as midfielder."

A fifth questioned: "Everything Rice does, so Trent is a defensive midfielder that can break up play and carry the ball???"

Alexander-Arnold touched on his new role for England following their victory over Malta. He says the position felt 'natural' and 'comfortable'.

He said: "I haven't played it too much, but it feels comfortable.

"It feels natural, I will say that. It's somewhere I can see myself playing. I want to make sure I am regularly on the team sheet and that was a good foundation to build on.

"I think the role I've been playing with club football, it's a new avenue," he added. "It's still early doors, it's only one match, but it's important that when I get the opportunity, I take it."
