Gary Neville Explains What Transfers Manchester United Need To Be Title Contenders

The Sky Sports pundit believes his former club are still four transfers away from Liverpool and City, even with Donny van de Beek.

Gary Neville thinks Manchester United are still lacking in every area of the pitch to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team showed signs of improvement at the end of last season but they are still someway short of competing for major honours.

United do look likely to add Donny van de Beek to their squad but Neville believes they are still around four or five signings short still.

"The Manchester United squad, as it stands today, cannot challenge for the Premier League title this season," the former United full-back told Sky Sports.

"The squad needed four or five improvements and it still needs four or five improvements. I've been saying that for a year and I've even nominated the positions I feel they need to improve.

"...They have to sign a world class centre-back. For me, another midfield player. I also think a right winger, a centre-forward and you have to look at left-back because of Luke Shaw's injuries and the fact he has obviously been in and out of the team in the last two or three years."

United's signing of Van de Beek will certainly give them more options creatively, alongside Paul Pogba and Brune Fernandes, although there are still questions about a more defensive midfielder needing to be added alongside Nemanja Matic.

The 13 times Premier League champions are also trying to fix the issue at centre back with talk that the manager wants to make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, although the German side clearly aren't too keen on letting him go.

At left back the club have been linked to Real Madrid defender Sergio Reguilon, who helped knock the English side out of the Europa League whilst on loan at Sevilla last month.

Upfront there has been talk of a move for Lyon's Moussa Dembele, who scored twice against Manchester City in the Champions League and obviously at right wing Jadon Sancho has been heavily linked.

Of course it's one thing there being rumours of United actually making high profile moves for players in the positions Neville believes they require reinforcements but it's a whole different matter those transfers actually happening.

With all their big six rivals having already signed players this summer United will be hoping to get the Van de Beek deal done quickly and then focus on their other transfer targets.
