Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a big money move for Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez, with the midfielder thought to be interested in leaving the Spanish side.

So far this summer most of United's focus in the transfer market has been on signing number one target Jadon Sancho, despite that deal having no chance of happening according to Borussia Dortmund.

However Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also targeting more signings and, according to the Daily Star, Atletico midfielder Niguez is amongst those he's interested in.

United have targeted the 25-year-old in the past but were unable to do a deal with him, however it seems that he might be interested in the move, which could help move it along.

The report claims that Niguez is considering his future at the Wanda Metropolitano after Atleti were dumped out of the Champions League by RB Leipzig earlier this week.

It says that the club's 'lack of spending power' has led the midfielder to question whether or not he would be able to win trophies in the Spanish capital with Diego Simeone's team.

Reportedly the potential to play in a midfield three with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes would also appeal to Niguez, as Solskjaer looks to continue the improvement to his club's engine room.

The midfielder has a release clause of around £130 million but in the past it's been reported that Atleti would take closer to £80 million to sell their star player.

Following Atleti's 2-1 surprise loss to Leipzig on Thursday, the Spain international said, "It hurts to lose, but our rivals were better in the game. They raised the tempo and we did not know how to react. They were superior to us, and at times we were not even close to stopping them."

United have undoubtedly been improved in midfield since Fernandes joined the club at the end of January and Paul Pogba's return to form since the restart, following the Covid-19 break, has also been a huge plus.

Nemanja Matic's form alongside the attacking pair earned him a new three year deal but Fred and Scott McTominay's form has both fallen away.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Ajax's Donny van der Beek and Aston Villa's Jack Grealish, as Solskjaer attempt to further improve the midfield.

There are other areas of the team that United, who finished third in the league this season and are still in the Europa League, need to improve but there is no doubt Sancho remains the main target.
