Everton Turn To Surprise Target After Giving Up On Marco Silva

The Toffees have been without a permanent manager since sacking Ronald Koeman at the end of October.

They say when you sack a manager you're supposed to have a plan as to who will replace him, Everton are quickly looking like they've misplaced that plan as they have another name in mind to replace Ronald Koeman.

In the summer there was quite a lot of optimism from Everton. Sure the Toffees lost Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United but a lot of money was reinvested into Ronald Koeman's squad.

But a poor start to the season exposed problems with the balance of the squad and soon Koeman was under pressure and then sacked on October 23rd. David Unsworth took control on an interim basis.

It is now exactly a month since Koeman was sacked and it has looked very much like Marco Silva was Everton's top choice but a £10 million offer to Watford was rejected. The Times report that club owner Farhad Moshiri has now given up on Silva.

The newspaper also say that the next manager on their list is currently a manager at all. No, it's not Ryan Giggs. The report says that RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick is now one of their candidates.

The 59 year old has had quite a long managerial career but since 2012 has been sporting director at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig with only a one season break as Leipzig manager where he got them promoted to the Bundesliga.

Rangnick was considered and interviewed by Everton in 2013 to replace David Moyes, when the Scot moved to Old Trafford, but the Toffees picked Roberto Martinez instead. He has also been on the FA's shortlist previously to be England manager.

Moshiri was happy to pay even more than the £10 million he offered Watford for Marco Silva but the Premier League side were steadfast in their stance that they wouldn't lose their manager mid season.

Unsworth remains a possibility to take the job full time and has picked up four points in his previous two games.
