Veteran defender Thiago Silva looks set to make a shock return to European football on a six-month deal after impressing at the Club World Cup over the summer.

Silva is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe this century, with 23 major trophies to his name.

The Brazilian has played for some of Europe's biggest clubs, including AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

At the end of the 2023/24 season with Chelsea, Silva returned to Fluminense as a free agent, helping the club avoid relegation.

The centre-back reminded the world of his enduring quality at last summer's Club World Cup.

Fluminense were one of the tournament's surprise packages, knocking out Champions League finalists Inter Milan on their way to the semi-finals.

Although they were eliminated by Silva's former side and eventual winners Chelsea, the competition was another reminder of the defender's quality.

Now at 41, Silva may be set for a final return to European football, with Serie A leaders AC Milan reportedly keen to sign him on a short-term deal.

Silva previously played for the Italian giants between 2009 and 2012, winning the league title in 2010/11.

Under Massimiliano Allegri, Milan have made a strong start to the season and currently top the table.

Although they have only conceded nine goals in 13 games, the club are looking to strengthen defensively.

Spanish outlet Fichajes report: "The Milan board values not only his performance on the pitch, but also his impact in the dressing room.

"His leadership, international experience, and ability to guide younger players are factors that carry as much weight as his sporting achievements."

They add that Silva would be an 'emergency signing', bringing experience to the squad for the remainder of the season.

Milan are not competing in Europe, but they remain in the Coppa Italia and are holding out hopes for a potential title push.

Fichajes also report that the move would appeal to Silva.

"At his age, he's not looking for a long-term contract," they say.

"But rather the chance to compete at the highest level again and say goodbye to European football in a familiar environment.

"San Siro could be the perfect setting for one last memorable chapter in his career."

Talks are reportedly already underway between the player and the club about a potential return.

Since leaving Milan, Silva has spoken fondly of the club on multiple occasions.

While at PSG in 2018, he told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Milan belong in my heart and they always will do.

"I'm a huge fan and am following everything which is going on there closely."
