Newcastle target second ex-Spurs star as Matthias Jaissle looks to replace Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali

Newcastle United are continuing their midfield rebuild under new manager Matthias Jaissle after they let stars Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali depart for Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.

The Magpies are set for a fresh start this season following the departure of several of their stars who were central to Eddie Howe’s team, but with the exit of the English manager, everything is all change at the club.

Fans will be pleased to have seen their club earn a victory over Valencia in Jaissle’s first game in charge; however, there will be a hope that the 2025 Carabao Cup champions can make several additions to their squad ahead of their Premier League opener with Liverpool at St James’ Park.

This need for additions has seen the club linked with former Spurs and Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with the Danish international currently playing his football at Marseille.

According to the Daily Mail, the 31-year-old has indicated he is keen on the switch to the northeast of England, with it being suggested ‘the Dane as the potential organiser at the base of his young midfield’ for the new head coach of the club.

Hojbjerg is not the only former Spurs midfielder that the Magpies are targeting this summer, as they have now been linked to Joao Palhinha.

The Portuguese international has been linked with a move to Newcastle, according to the same report, with the outlet saying that they would be interested in him being used in the same role as Hojbjerg, possibly being more of an alternative if they do not land the Dane.

Newcastle believe that both players would be crucial to helping in the development of youthful stars in the midfield, including recent additions Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba.

Palhinha may be considered a deal that could be agreed with relative ease, as he has been told he can leave by Bayern Munich, as reported on X (formerly Twitter) by iMiaSanMia.

The 31-year-old has also previously impressed in the Premier League for both Fulham to earn a move to Bayern Munich and before doing so again in his loan spell with Spurs last season.
