Manchester United have added a surprise target to their transfer wish-list after Michael Carrick confirmed the club's summer intentions.

Man United made significant attacking reinforcements to their squad last summer, signing Benjamim Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Despite splashing out in excess of £60 million for each star player, the Red Devils plan to recruit more forwards when the transfer window reopens this summer.

Speaking ahead of Man United's game against Newcastle United, Carrick outlined the club's summer transfer plans, revealing a left-winger could be on their radar.

On signing a left-winger in the summer, Carrick said: "It's something to look at [signing a left-winger]. I think Matheus can play in that position. Amad can do it too. We have very good options all over the front line."

Just days after Carrick's comments, a shock name has emerged as a potential target to fill that spot.

According to The Daily Mail, Man United have added Marcus Tavernier to their list of left-winger targets for the summer.

Tavernier has starred at Bournemouth this season, scoring six goals and registering five assists.

He joined the club in the summer of 2022 and is contracted at the Vitality Stadium until 2029.

Per the report, he could be valued around £40 million and Bournemouth may be prepared to offload the 26-year-old as they have been willing to 'wheel and deal' over the years to make a profit before discovering new talents for smaller fees.

Tavernier is also attracting interest from Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, who made enquiries in January.

Man United will monitor developments and their final decision will be determined by where they finish this season as they aim to finish in a Champions League spot.

Champions League qualification will help Man United beat their rivals to players like Tavernier, but they were able to sign the aforementioned Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo without Europe's premier club competition.

However, if they miss out on Champions League football, they may need to sell players to generate funds before acquiring new talent.

What other positions are Manchester United looking at this summer?

A left-winger isn't the only position Man United are keen to strengthen ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The publication states the club also want two midfielders and will look to strengthen at the back, with a new full-back and centre-back.

One of the midfield options is to replace the outgoing Casemiro, who will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season when his existing deal expires.
