Erik ten Hag has spoken about the prospect of Manchester United signing Matthijs de Ligt.

With the summer transfer window now in full swing, United have been working around the clock to improve their squad.

This month, United have already completed deals to bring in striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and young defender Leny Yoro from French Ligue 1 outfit Lille.

The Red Devils have also been linked with a host of different names, including the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Adrien Rabiot, Jarrad Branthwaite and De Ligt.

During the Euro 2024 tournament, it was reported that United had agreed personal terms with De Ligt.

Speaking in a recent interview, United boss Ten Hag touched on the club’s plans to sign the Bayern Munich star.

As per transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag said AD: “It remains to be seen whether Matthijs de Ligt will come... I know him well.

“I wanted to sign him two years ago but at that time, he was already very far along to join Bayern.”

The Dutchman added: “Believe it or not, his name did not come from me in the process.”

United striker Rasmus Hojlund was quizzed on De Ligt’s potential move to Old Trafford this month, the Danish international replied: “That [move] has nothing to do with me, so I can't answer that question [about De Ligt signing].

“But he is a good defender.”

Speaking about why he chose to move to United, Zirkzee said: “It wasn't a difficult decision. I mean, I love Bologna a lot, but Manchester United just gave me a very, very good feeling. I'm confident that what's planned will also happen.

“It's been a rollercoaster, the past few weeks. Some very good experiences and I'm very happy to be here. Obviously, making a transfer to Manchester United is something very positive.”

He added: “I just can't wait to get started and continue what I basically did last season. I'm just hoping to improve every day and do the best I can.”
