Leny Yoro has explained exactly why he performed a U-turn on his proposed move to Real Madrid and signed for Manchester United instead.

On Thursday evening United confirmed the signing of centre-back Yoro from Lille, completing one of the most remarkable transfer smash-and-grabs of recent times.

Just a few days ago the 18-year-old, regarded as a 'generational talent', looked set to join Real Madrid after his representatives held talks with the Spanish giants. The player was reportedly keen to join the reigning European champions.

A number of other potential suitors - including Liverpool - pulled out of the race to sign Yoro under the impression that he had his heart set on Madrid.

Yet on Thursday, United confirmed the signing of the French defender after agreeing a fee of £52 million ($65m; €62m) with a further €8m euros (£6.73m) in potential add-ons.

Yoro has signed a five-year deal valid until 2029, with the option of a further year.

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid's offer to Lille was worth less than half of United's. Had Yoro stayed put in France, then Madrid would have likely signed him on a free transfer next summer when his contract was due to expire.

In an interview with United's in-house media team, Yoro explained why he decide to make the move to Old Trafford.

"Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop as part of this exciting project, showing a lot of care for me and my family," Yoro said.

"It’s incredible honour to sign for a club of United's stature."

Despite what Yoro said, the reality is that once Lille accepted United's bid, he had a huge decision to make.

According to The Athletic, former United players including Rio Ferdinand were deployed to convince Yoro that United was the best destination for his development.

In addition, United's contract offer reportedly came with better terms than Madrid's.
