One Liverpool exit could end up paving the way for Martin Zubimendi to move to Anfield.

Over the last week, Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Spain and Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi.

It has been reported that the 25-year-old has a release clause in his contract worth around £51 million.

However, nothing has been finalised as the Spaniard is still mulling over whether to leave his boyhood club for Liverpool.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently wrote: “Liverpool are still working on Martin Zubimendi deal, pushing on player side. #LFC aware of Real Sociedad active talks with Zubimendi, trying to keep him at the club.

“Real Sociedad would also offer him new deal if he ends up staying…but Liverpool are still there.”

Now, with the Zubimendi deal still in the balance, Sociedad have already brought in a new midfielder, in the shape of Luka Sucic from Red Bull Salzburg.

In turn, the Austrian side, managed by former Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders, are eyeing a move for Reds youngster Bobby Clark.

As reported by The Times, Salzburg have made a third bid for Clark, which is said to be close to Liverpool’s asking price of £10 million.

If the Clark deal goes ahead, he could become Sucic’s replacement at Salzburg and Sucic could replace Zubimendi at Sociedad, which will then pave the way for the Spaniard to join Liverpool.

Liverpool ended their pre-season fixtures with a 4-1 win over Sevilla at Anfield on Sunday.

After the match, manager Arne Slot was asked about potential incomings, he said: “I think I said as a club like we are, we’re always looking if we can strengthen the squad but it’s not so easy to strengthen if you saw both games today. If we can, we will (strengthen the squad).

“I’ve said many times before that I’ve inherited a really strong team. If we can and if we think it’s possible, we will strengthen the squad but only if we think we can and if it’s possible.”

When quizzed on Zubimendi, Slot replied: “You can come up with hundreds of names!”
