Liverpool fans have been sent into a complete meltdown after an update was given on the club’s pursuit of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Liverpool had identified Zubimendi as their primary target as they look to add to Arne Slot’s midfield options.

The 25-year-old, who was part of Spain’s Euro 2024 winning squad, is said to have a release clause of £51 million in his Sociedad contract.

Prior to Liverpool, Zubimendi had been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona.

On Thursday, it was reported that Zubimendi was mulling over the move as Sociedad continue to tempt him to stay put.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg wrote: “FC Liverpool are pushing to sign Martin #Zubimendi with ongoing talks.

“25 y/o midfielder is keen to join #LFC with immediate effect. His agency „Idub Global“ with best connections to Liverpool as they are also managing Xavi Alonso. w/@kerry_hau. It’s unclear whether Liverpool has to pay the €60m release clause or whether free negotiations are possible.”

On Friday morning, Plettenberg sent Liverpool fans into orbit as he simply put a tick emoji alongside a Spanish flag.

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “What does this even mean?”

Another tweeted: “What does this mean? Staying in Spain or your earlier msg is happening.”

A third fan added: “SAY SOMETHING.”

Someone else wrote: “Don't do that to me is this for real?”

A fifth commented: “Don’t play with my emotions Plettenberg.”

Another fan said: “A tick above a tweet where he suggests he’s off to liverpool suggests he’s off to Liverpool but that’s cryptic enough to be interpreted both ways.”

Liverpool are currently gearing up for their first season under the leadership of Slot, who replced Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

The Reds will take on Sevilla and Las Palmas before kicking off their 24/25 Premier League campaign against Ipswich Town next weekend.
