Harvey Elliott's Liverpool nightmare is over as deal agreed with huge club

Harvey Elliott has agreed a deal to leave Liverpool, putting an end to his disappointing return.

To say that Elliott has had a difficult time in the past year or so would be a massive understatement.

In September last year, the forward joined Aston Villa after admitting that he did not want to be "wasting years" in his career with Liverpool, where he felt he was not guaranteed minutes.

The deal was an initial season-long loan, with an obligation to buy for £35million included in the deal, subject to various conditions of the loan deal being met.

Elliott's move to Villa Park would become permanent if he played 10 Premier League games for his new club, but having also been sidelined by Unai Emery, he played only four, with nine appearances in total.

Therefore, he returned to Liverpool ahead of the 2026/27, with his future still uncertain as it was not clear if he would remain at Anfield under the new leadership of Andoni Iraola, or leave once again.

But now, Elliott's future has been decided, as it has been confirmed that he will leave Liverpool to join La Liga side Valencia on a season-long loan.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish side, who finished ninth in La Liga last season, will cover the majority of Elliott's wages, with a medical booked to take place soon.

Previous reports have claimed that Elliott's Liverpool contract was set to expire next summer, meaning loaning him out for 2026/27 would be accepting losing him for free next year.

However, this is not the case, with the 23-year-old under contract with Liverpool until summer 2028, meaning he can either return to Liverpool to fight for his place next summer, or be sold on a permanent basis after a season with Valencia.

Andoni Iraola speaks out on Harvey Elliott saga

Elliott featured regularly for Iraola during his first pre-season as Liverpool manager, impressing during his short stint back in red.

It therefore came as a surprise to see that he had been left out of the squads for the Premier League clashes against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

Addressing the situation, Iraola stated: “With Harvey… I can only choose 20. Harvey is trying and improving every week but I still prefer other options, about the balance on the bench.

"That’s why James McConnell was in the squad, but it’s now another new week and new chances for everyone. They have to keep that mentality.”

Liverpool and Valencia have until 23:00 BST on Tuesday, September 1, when the summer transfer window officially shuts, to finalise the deal.
