Arsenal could well end up as runners-up for the second season in a row - and former Gunners striker Paul Merson has pinpointed a Newcastle United star as one who would take his old club to "another level".

Mikel Arteta's side could still win the Premier League title for the first time in 20 years as they trail Manchester City by two points.

On the final day of the season, the Gunners entertain Everton at the Emirates Stadium, while City take on West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal need to beat the Toffees and hope the Hammers can pick up three points against Pep Guardiola's side to have a chance of claiming the title.

Whatever happens, the Gunners will likely be active in the market this summer as Arteta bids to strengthen his squad even further and mount an assault on all fronts for silverware next season.

Former Gunners striker Merson - who scored 99 goals in 417 games across all competitions for the North London club between 1985 and 1997 - has spoken on the players he believes his former team ought to be looking at this summer.

The likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, who have both flourished for the Magpies, are mentioned as stars that have impressed for Eddie Howe's side.

But Merson believes the acquisition of striker Alexander Isak would be the one which would benefit his old club the most, and take them 'another level'.

Isak has been in a rich vein of form this season, scoring 24 goals in only 39 games across all competitions.

And Merson believes that some of Newcastle's stars will have to move away from St James' Park if they want to lift silverware, prompting his belief that Isak moving to Arsenal would make sense.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson said: "They (Newcastle) need to look to keep their players as teams are going to be sniffing around for Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes,’ the ex-Arsenal and England midfielder wrote.

"They are a massive team, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of their stars moved on to win trophies.

"If Arsenal sign a striker like Isak, I think they go to another level."
