Steven Gerrard favourite for Southampton job ahead of Wayne Rooney and current manager

Relegation to the Championship looks certain for Southampton, but the identity of their next manager is not.

Steven Gerrard is the ODDSbible favourite to become Southampton manager, ahead of Wayne Rooney and the Saints' current boss.

Southampton have been a model of consistency in recent years, but their 11-year stay in the premier league looks set to come to an end.

The Saints are currently rock bottom of the Premier League table with 24 points, and are eight points from safety with just three games left to play.

To stand a chance of staying up, Southampton would need Nottingham Forest to lose all three of their remaining fixtures and Everton to pick up no more than one point.

Manager Ruben Selles, Southampton's third boss of the season, recently told BBC Sport that the club will "present an agenda" outlining how they will deal with relegation to the Championship.

However, according to the latest odds, getting rid of the Spanish coach might be at the top of the club's to-do list.

39-year-old Selles joined the club last summer as Ralph Hasenhuttl's assistant, and took charge of one match following the Austrian's sacking in November.

Selles was then appointed manager until the end of the season following he dismissal of new manager Nathan Jones in February.

Southampton have won just nine points in 13 matches under Selles' leadership, and as a result he has odds of 9/1 to lead the team on the first day of next season.

The favourite to be in the dugout at St Mary's is legendary Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard.

The 42-year-old is rightly regarded as English footballing royalty, but his managerial track record doesn't carry the same shine.

Gerrard impressed in his first professional managerial role at Scottish giants Rangers, but he lasted just under a year in charge at Aston Villa.

He was sacked after Villa won just two of their opening 12 matches of the current season, and has been out of the job since.

Another former England star, Wayne Rooney, is the second favourite to replace Selles.

The current DC United boss has odds of 8/1 to take the job, although his side have made a mixed start to the 2023 MLS season.

Rooney does have Championship experience, having miraculously rescued Derby County from relegation in 2020/21.

A host of former Premier League bosses are in the mix, including Jesse Marsch (10/1), Chris Wilder (12/1) and Frank Lampard (16/1).
