Jose Mourinho has left Roma with immediate effect, the club have announced in a statement - and he has already hinted at his next club.

Mourinho took charge of Roma in May 2021 after departing Totttenham, and won the Europa Conference League in his first season.

The Portuguese then guided Giallorossi to the Europa League final last season, where they lost to Roma.

This season has been tougher for Roma, as they sit eighth in Serie A.

Mourinho's last game in charge was a 1-0 defeat to fierce rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia, with the Portuguese boss robustly defending himself amid media criticism following the loss.

Now, however, the club have announced they have parted company with the 60-year-old.

In a club statement, Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said: "We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe than an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

"We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours."

Mourinho has previously suggested that he would be interested in taking a role with a national team if the time was right, having been linked with England and Portugal in the past.

UOL claimed in November he could take over as the head coach of the Brazil national team next summer, although that role has since been given to Dorival Junior.

The man himself has hinted that a move to the Saudi Pro League could be on the cards, as he revealed (quotes via ESPN): "Doors are always open for me in Saudi Arabia. I want to feel the development there.

"Cristiano was the first to go there and give a different perspective immediately. The players thought at first that it was a one-man show, but they realised in the summer that everything was really changing.

"Many players, not just at the last period of their careers, but also some players at the best years of their careers, are coming. Because the competition is real, not just at domestic league, but also the AFC Champions League is very interesting."
