Sam Kerr scores the winner to give Chelsea third successive FA Cup in front of record crowd

The 2023 FA Cup final took place in front of a record-breaking 77,390 fans at Wembley Stadium.

Sam Kerr scored the decisive goal to hand Chelsea their third successful FA Cup trophy with a 1-0 win over Manchester United.

The 2023 FA Cup final took place in front of a record-breaking 77,390 fans at Wembley Stadium.

It was a record attendance for a domestic women’s football match pitting two of the best teams in England against each other.

It was a tense affair that took until the 68th minute for the Matildas star to break the deadlock after Danish international Pernille Harder provided the assist.

Following a quick break Harder slotted the ball across the area for the Australian to slot home to send fans into raptures.

In trademark fashion, Kerr celebrated the goal with a backflip as impressive as the goal, before her teammates bombarded her.

Clips have gone viral online of the striker yelling ‘f***ing Chelsea’ as she passionately celebrated her third successive goal in an FA Cup final.

United had been on top throughout much of the early stages of the game, even putting the ball into the net just 20 seconds after kick-off, only for it to be disallowed for offside.

However, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes’ decision to bring on Harder, who had been injured for much of the season, proved to be the turning point.

It wasn’t the most dominating of victories, however, the team from Stamford Bridge proved why they are the premiere team in English football.

Ker told the BBC following the match: “I think it’s the sign of a great team, we didn’t have our best game but we pushed through.”

Meanwhile, Hayes claimed that her team’s experience at Wembley helped them in their victory.

She said: “We’ve played here more times than Stamford Bridge. Yes it’s home.”

Adding: “We know how to stay in a game and even if we weren’t at our best we have to work out how to change it.”

The Red Devils almost made it 1-1 in the closing stage of the final when goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger desperately blocked Leah Galton’s shot in the seventh minute of injury time.

It’s been a tight race at the top of the Women’s Super League ladder this season with the Manchester side currently in top position.

Chelsea is only one point behind them with a game in hand - and with just two matchdays left, the Blues could be in for a domestic double.

An excellent run into the Women’s World Cup for Sam Kerr.
