Fans left baffled as Premier League release now-deleted statement after Sheff Utd's relegation

Sheffield United's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Saturday.

The Premier League left fans baffled after they released a rare statement following Sheffield United's relegation.

Sheff United's relegation was confirmed on Saturday as they suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat against Newcastle United.

The visitors took the lead in the fifth minute, but Newcastle replied with five goals,

They were condemned to their 25th league defeat of the season at St. James' Park and will return to the Championship for the 2024/25 campaign.

After the result, the Premier League took to social media to comment on the Blades' relegation, leaving fans questioning their post.

In a now-deleted post, the Premier League indicated their drop from the top flight is dependent on Everton and Nottingham Forest's points deduction appeal.

The statement, which was swiftly removed, read: "Following their defeat to Newcastle, Sheffield Utd are relegated pending Everton and Nott'm Forest's points-deduction appeals."

Needless to say, fans were left puzzled over the Premier League's statement.

One X user wrote: "Seculate with point deduction is sad af."

A second wrote: "Pending what now?"

A third added: "Weird phrasing. What on earth do they mean?"

Forest were hit with a four-point deduction for failing to stay in line with the league's profitability and sustainability regulations, while Everton's 10-point deduction was reduced to six, before being deducted another two for a further breach.

Both clubs have lodged appeals, with an outcome expected in the coming weeks.

After his side's defeat to Newcastle, Chris Wilder gave a frank assessment of their spell in the Premier League.

"It stings and it hurts - we’ve not been good enough," he said.

"Sheffield United is a really good football club, I think everyone understands that.

"I’m enthusiastic and committed, along with my coaching staff. We know exactly what direction we need to go, what the culture needs to look like, what pre-season needs to look like."
