For the first time since 1995, a game in England's top flight is set to be played on Christmas Eve.

It was widely reported on Friday morning that Premier League chiefs are 'considering' the introduction of Christmas Eve football this year as they finalise their festive schedule.

The Telegraph claim "at least" one game from the original December 23rd fixture list could be moved to the 24th.

And now, it has emerged that Wolves' clash with Chelsea at Molineux is being 'earmarked' for the dreaded Christmas Eve slot.

That's according to The Express and Star, who say the governing body is targeting a 1pm kick-off, although it is unclear if this game will be the only one moved.

The current schedule has Wolves vs Chelsea at 3pm on December 23rd.

The report also suggests the game at Molineux will be shown on TV, although the decision has been met with anger online.

One fan commented on the decision, saying: "What a pathetic decision for both clubs. Feel sorry for the Chelsea fans who have to travel all the way up to Wolves when they'd want to be with their families."

A second wrote: "How ridiculous it that. Many people won't be able to attend," while a third added: "No thought for fans travelling on public transport at all, poor form this is."

Wolves' fixture list around the Christmas period is already strained. They are scheduled to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Boxing Day.

And four days later, Gary O'Neil's side will host Everton on December 30th.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are penned to face Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.

They will then make the 37-mile trip north to face newly-promoted Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on December 30th.

Back in 2017, discussions were held to schedule games on Christmas Day but after a similar amount of backlash, those plans were scrapped amid concerns over travel.

Leeds' win over Manchester United in 1995 was the last top flight game to be played on Christmas Eve.
