West Ham Relegation Could Create Never-Before-Seen Premier League Scenario

It would be a first in England's top flight.

A never-before-seen scenario could play out if West Ham are relegated from the Premier League alongside fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Hammers are in a relegation dog fight, with Nuno Espirito Santo's side currently sitting seven points adrift of safety following a calamitous 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

A win over Forest, who are currently in 17th place, could have seen them close the gap to just one point.

However, second-half goals from Nicolas Dominguez and Morgan Gibbs White sealed a crucial victory for Sean Dyche's men, while West Ham's relegation chances increased to 88.76 per cent, according to Opta.

Taking to X, he wrote: "Worth noting that if Wolves and West Ham do both go down, then next season will be the first in its entire 137 year history that there will be no clubs beginning with W in the English top flight. (UNLESS, of course, Watford, Wrexham or West Brom go up.)"

Wolves' chances of survival are slim. In fact, Opta suggests there is only a 0.73 per cent chance of them staying in the Premier League, despite their recent resurgence.

A quick look at the Championship table suggests Watford are the most likely to achieve promotion, with Javi Gracia's side currently in sixth, 11 points behind league leaders Coventry City.

Recently-promoted Wrexham are currently just one point behind Watford in ninth, while struggling West Bromwich Albion sit 18th after nine wins from a possible 26.

West Ham should be forced to leave the London Stadium if they suffer Premier League relegation, according to Jamie O'Hara

Towards the end of last year, former Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara made a bold suggestion after talkSPORT co-host Jermaine Pennant suggested West Ham's home would be the biggest stadium in Championship history.

“I think if they go down, they shouldn’t be allowed that ground," said O'Hara. "They would have to vacate, share with Leyton Orient or something. It’s unacceptable to have the Olympic Stadium in the Championship. It’s unacceptable."

He added: “This thing is used to watching winners, gold medallists, and they’re going to have Championship football. It’s unacceptable. They should vacate.”
