The Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard debate has been one of the biggest discussion points in English football history and former England goalkeeper Ben Foster only fueled it when he ranked the top 10 midfielders in Premier League history.

Foster racked up 390 appearances in the Premier League during his time at Watford, Manchester United, Birmingham City and West Brom and ranked the trio in his esteemed list during a segment on his 'Fozcast' show.

He proceeded to rattle through a list of names and started off by naming Manchester City pair David Silva and Yaya Toure either side of his former teammate Ryan Giggs, who came in ninth place.

Giggs was joined by compatriot and two-time PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale, who slotted into seventh spot despite being more of a winger than a midfielder.

Next up saw focus on one of the fiercest rivalries in the history of the Premier League but it was former United captain Roy Keane who got the nod ahead of Arsenal's legendary skipper Patrick Vieira, who occupied sixth and fifth respectively.

But Gerrard's placing on the list is perhaps the most controversial element as he found himself down in fourth, despite many viewing him as the most complete midfielder to play in the English top tier.

The Liverpool legend had both Lampard and Kevin De Bruyne ranked higher than him in the top three and then finished with his former teammate Scholes, calling him "the best midfielder in Premier League history".

Foster said there there was "massive umming and ahhing" with his selections, which we're widely disputed by his fellow panelists. After claiming that he didn't think his picks "were a million miles off", his co-host Tubes suggested that "some of the ordering is wrong".

Ben Foster's top ten Premier League midfielders list in full:

10. David Silva (Manchester City)

9. Ryan Giggs ([Manchester United)

8. Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

7. Gareth Bale (Spurs)

6. Patrick Vieira (Arsenal)

5. Roy Keane (Manchester United)

4. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

3. Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

2. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

1. Paul Scholes (Manchester United)

The comment on TikTok were quick to disagree with Foster's placement, with one fuming: "Steven Gerrard fourth is crazy".

A second added: "If you don't know it's Paul Scholes then you don't know ball."

A third stated: "If Bale is a midfielder then so is Ronaldo, therefore Ronaldo is first."

A final user pointed out one glaring omission, writing: "Cesc Fabregas must have played golf".
