Liverpool have issued a statement after another safety meeting was held at Anfield to assess the weather and travel conditions for Sunday's Premier League clash against Manchester United.

After heavy snow hit areas of Merseyside overnight, Liverpool's much-anticipated home game against Manchester United – a game scheduled to kick off at 4.30pm – has been under threat of postponement.

A Safety Advisory Group reviewed the situation at 9am on Sunday to determine whether or not it was safe to go ahead, and a decision was deferred until 11:45am.

Liverpool released a statement at 9:31am to confirm that the match was planned to go ahead as normal. "Every effort is being made to get the game on," the statement added. "A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions."

Manchester United also posted a statement to update fans on the current situation. It read: "Our match against Liverpool is set to still go ahead at this stage, despite snow and weather warnings in the North West today. Take care if you are travelling to the game — we will update you with the latest developments."

Now, both clubs have confirmed that the match will go ahead after two safety meetings were conducted to assess the weather and travel conditions.

A statement from Liverpool read: "Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions."

They added: "We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there."

Liverpool and Manchester airports have also reopened and roads are reasonably safe given the snowfall, according to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

Manchester United have also released a statement of their own to confirm the news.

It read: "Following a second safety meeting, it has been decided that today's match between Manchester United and Liverpool will go ahead.

"There have been snowfall and weather warnings across the North West on Sunday but it has been deemed safe for fans to attend the 16:30 GMT kick-off. Take care if you are travelling to Merseyside today, Reds."
