New Crystal Palace owner has already banned team from signing player based on video game

The new Crystal Palace owner has a controversial history of making sports decisions based on video game statistics

Crystal Palace have been given a glimpse into their potential new ownership after their new owner previously banned a player signing due to statistics from a video game.

After rounds of talks, Palace's 43 percent ownership stake owned by American businessman John Textor has now been transferred.

The 59-year-old is also the owner of Eagle football group that also has clubs like Botafogo and Olympique Lyon under its wing.

Lyon, who finished sixth in Ligue 1, also qualified to the Europa League. But under UEFA's rule, two teams under a multi club model cannot participate in the same competition.

This led to Textor deciding to offload his stake to NFL franchise New York Jets co-owner, Woody Johnson.

But the 78-year-old has an interesting history when it comes to running the franchise and importantly, signing talent to the roster.

Johnson used Madden to make a decision about a player

Johnson formerly served as United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom and runs one of the most well known NFL franchise in New York Jets.

He purchased the Jets in 2000 and in more recent years, one of the stories that has been making rounds shows how Johnson can be a very hands on owner.

According to a report in The Athletic, Johnson made the decision to not bring a player based on his rating in popular video game- Madden.

The outlet reported: "Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, a former Denver Broncos first-round pick, flashed on the screen. Jets general manager Joe Douglas expressed interest, according to someone familiar with the meeting. Johnson took out his phone and started typing.

"A few weeks later, Douglas and his Broncos counterpart, George Paton, were deep in negotiations for a trade that would have sent Jeudy to the Jets and given future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers another potential playmaker.

"The Broncos felt a deal was near. Then, abruptly, it all fell apart. In Denver’s executive offices, they couldn’t believe the reason why.

"Douglas told the Broncos that Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in Madden NFL, the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources."

The real world outcome? The Broncos traded the receiver to the Cleveland Browns where he crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career. For those not used to NFL and its stats, that's an incredible feat.

Johnson still needs approval from Premier League

Johnson's takeover still has to be approved by the Premier League.

The club have made their official statement, but Johnson still has to pass the League's owners and Director's Test, before being recognised as an owner by the Premier League.

Once the league approves him, Palace can then make their way into the Europa League without any worries,

The League is expected to move quickly according to reports to help Palace play in Europe.
