Former England international holds record for most answers on The Chase's 'cash builder' round

Former England international holds record for most answers on The Chase's 'cash builder' round

A record-breaking display which even stunned Bradley Walsh.

A former Liverpool and Man City goalkeeper is responsible for the most correct answers in the cash builder round on ITV quiz show The Chase.

If you live in the United Kingdom, chances are you've sat down at 5pm after a hard day at work to watch Bradley Walsh and his team see if they've got what it takes to beat The Chaser.

Let's give a quick explainer for those not well-versed. In the build-up to going head to head with one of six Chasers, contestants will take part in a cash builder.

Walsh has 60 seconds to ask as many questions as possible, and for every correct answer given, the participant earns £1000.

That sum is carried over to a round against The Chaser, who can eliminate their opponent if they catch them on a virtual board.

ITV aired a Soccer Aid celebrity special back in 2022 and up against The Chaser was David James.

A self-professed brainbox, the ex-England man became the first celebrity to amass £11,000 on the cash builder.

That means he managed to get 11 questions right in the space of 60 seconds. Chaser Darragh Ennis remarked after seeing what he was up against: "And they made me a Chaser!"

It gets even more impressive. James returned to the show earlier this year and answered 10 questions correctly, taking his cumulative correct answers up to 21.

That's more than any celebrity guest in the programme's 14-year history.

The 53-year-old currently holds an unwanted record as well.

Alongside YouTuber Joe Sugg, journalist Lucrezia Millarini and singer Myles Stephenson, he tallied up a whopping £213,000 prize pot heading into the Final Chase.

The quartet didn't manage to bring it home, making it the largest prize pot ever lost.
