Bryan Mbeumo’s future takes surprise twist as Man Utd’s Premier League rivals step in to hijack deal

Mbeumo's future is now in fresh doubt despite his desire to move to Old Trafford.

A second Premier League has entered the race to sign Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, it has been reported.

The Athletic's David Ornstein revealed on Monday that Mbeumo wanted to move to Old Trafford this summer.

The Cameroon international would become United's second signing of the window if he joins the club, with Ruben Amorim's side having already paid £62.5 million to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

Mbeumo scored 20 goals in the Premier League this season - his best individual campaign for the Bees in any division.

While it appeared that there would be few obstacles to the move taking place, one has recently emerged - and it may not come as a major surprise to fans.

According to The Sun, Tottenham have joined the race to sign Mbeumo and are willing to pay £60 million to bring him to north London.

Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday and have been heavily linked with naming Thomas Frank - Mbeumo's current boss at Brentford - as his replacement.

It is claimed that Frank is 'open' to the move after nearly seven years at Brentford, and Spurs are willing to pay the £10 million compensation clause within his contract.

Should the Dane switch clubs, his first target is then expected to be Mbeumo, with Spurs holding an advantage over United in that they can offer him Champions League football.

It would be their second summer signing - after paying a £20 million obligation to sign centre-back Kevin Danso - as they look to strengthen the squad to play in Europe's top continental competition once again.

Spurs won the Europa League by beating United 1-0 in Bilbao last month, but that wasn't enough to keep Postecoglou in his job.

That decision did not go down well with large sections of Spurs supporters, with many noting that chairman Daniel Levy didn't even provide his own remarks surrounding the Australian boss in either his post-season review, or in the press release accompanying the sacking announcement.
