Arsenal told they need to replace Aaron Ramsdale to improve as he isn't a 'modern goalkeeper'

Aaron Ramsdale returned to action on Saturday night during a friendly clash against Manchester United

Arsenal have been told they have to replace goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale if they want to improve.

Back in the summer of 2021, Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in a deal worth a reported £30 million.

Since then, he has established himself as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeper and was impressive during Arsenal’s title challenge last season.

On Saturday, the 25-year-old returned to action as Arsenal lost 2-0 against Manchester United in a friendly clash at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Ramsdale came under criticism for United’s first goal as he failed to stop a long-range effort from Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking on talkSPORT, United fan Mark Goldbridge has urged Arsenal to replace Ramsdale as he is not a modern goalkeeper.

He said: “I have a very strong affection towards David de Gea in relation to I really liked him at Manchester United but I had to acknowledge old school goalkeeper, won the Golden Glove last year and has been replaced ruthlessly by Erik ten Hag.

“Watching Ramsdale last night, it was just in my head the whole night. He is not a modern goalkeeper.

“We have seen Pep Guardiola make loads of goalkeeper changes, we’ve seen Klopp bring Alisson in, we’ve now seen Ten Hag remove the best goalkeeper in the league in relation to clean sheets to bring in a ball-playing goalkeeper.”

Goldbridge continued: “Aaron Ramsdale is very good shot-stopper and I do like him but when you look at him last season, passes per 90 he was 13th in the league. Coming for crosses, second bottom for Ramsdale, save percentage, 12th in the league for Ramsdale.

“Ramsdale is a good goalkeeper and you can’t read everything from stats but I don’t think he is a modern goalkeeper. You need a keeper to play on the edge of his box in the modern game.”
