Football set to return next weekend, but some Premier League games remain at risk

Football is in line to return next weekend, but policing issues mean some Premier League fixtures might not get the go-ahead.

Football is set to return next weekend but some games are still at risk of being postponed.

As a mark of respect for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 on Thursday, games in the Premier League, EFL, WSL and National League were called off this past weekend.

Many games at grassroots level also did not take place in what was a massively unpopular decision considering rugby and cricket matches did go ahead.

It's said that potential fan dissent during tributes was a pivotal factor for why governing bodies elected to cancel the fixtures.

The country is in a period of mourning but John Cross from The Mirror is reporting that the Premier League are hoping to have as many games as possible on this weekend.

The EFL are getting back going again as of Tuesday with midweek fixtures and there is pressure from TV companies to get things back up and running.

However, in London there is the need for policing for the Queen's state funeral on Monday and that brings about an issue.

On Sunday, live on Sky Sports, Chelsea host Liverpool in the capital in the pick of the fixtures - while preceding that is Brentford's visit of league leaders Arsenal at 2pm. Kick-off and schedule changes are being talked about.

Tottenham host Leicester in London on the Saturday, with Millwall vs Blackpool, QPR vs Stoke and Leyton Orient vs Walsall happening in the Championship and League Two.

Champions League action is expected to go ahead as normal, with Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool at home and Spurs away to Sporting.

Rangers vs Napoli at Ibrox is now being played on Wednesday night instead of Tuesday due to additional police presence being deployed in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital.

No Napoli fans are allowed to attend the game.

So far there has been no confirmation from UEFA as to whether Arsenal's visit of PSV Eindhoven can go ahead, with the police problem the key factor once again.

After the next round of domestic games, an international break commences whereby England will take on Italy and Germany.

The Three Lions will debut the new national anthem lyrics to mark Charles becoming King.
