Valentin Barco played just 307 minutes of Premier League football for Brighton - so what went wrong?

Valentin Barco will come up against his former club on Sunday when Chelsea take on Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Seen by many as one of South America's biggest young talents, Brighton signed Barco from Boca Juniors in January 2024 after the Seagulls beat a host of top clubs, including Manchester City, to his signature.

A left-back by trade, you could argue that the diminutive Argentine was not actually suited to being an orthodox Premier League full-back because of the physical demands of England's top flight.

Instead, his strengths were ball carrying, creating chances and drifting into midfield, something that caught the attention of Liam Rosenior when their paths crossed. But more on that later.

Barco did show promise towards the end of 2023-24 season under Roberto De Zerbi, playing 307 Premier League minutes across six appearances.

A long chat with Pep Guardiola after he impressed against Manchester City even sparked rumours of a possible move, but soon, the arrival of Fabian Hurzeler appeared to be the turning point for the Argentine.

Despite having a promising pre-season, Hurzeler picked midfielder Jack Hinshelwood as his left-back for their Premier League opener against Everton, while Pervis Estupinan and Ferdi Kadioglu were ahead of Barco in the pecking order.

His route to regular minutes looked a difficult one, so a loan to Sevilla was arranged for the 2024-25 campaign. It turned into a disaster.

Barco made just nine appearances in all competitions for the Spanish side before the loan was terminated in January. “He didn’t have the minutes I suppose he wanted," said manager Garcia Pimienta. "I imagine he is trying to find an exit."

A short time later, Barco's future was a topic of discussion. Asked whether the defender needed a change of environment, Fabian Hurzeler said: “I think at the moment here it's not the right environment for him.”

The move that changed everything for Valentin Barco

Strasbourg agreed a six-month loan deal for the Argentine, a move that proved to be a turning point in Barco's life. He transitioned into a central midfielder, which was his natural position all along, and the results were remarkable.

He made 15 appearances during the second half of 2024-25 and Strasbourg signed him permanently that summer for just £7.87 million.

Barco, who joined Chelsea this summer after recording three goals and 11 assists in 58 appearances for Strasbourg across the 2025-26 campaign, recently credited the position switch as life-changing.

"I think the change of position changed my life," he said, as per ESPN. "It helped me enormously to get back into playing, to be an important part of the team, to return to the Argentina national team, to go to the World Cup, and now to be able to return to the Premier League.

"I feel comfortable playing in midfield. I love it because you get on the ball a lot, and that way you control the game and set the pace, so I think that period was very important for my career and my life."

To answer the question of 'what went wrong' at Brighton, several factors could be at play. His lack of physicality was apparent, but the decision to deploy him at full-back rather than further up the pitch was, in hindsight, a poor call.

If reports are to be believed, he was also eager to become a first-team regular at Brighton, so a lack of patience could be a reason behind his short spell at the Amex.

What we do know is that Barco is thriving in central positions. On his Chelsea debut against Luton Town, he was one of their standout performers as Xabi Alonso's side secured a 2-0 win.

The 22-year-old, who played more accurate through balls than any other player in Europe's top five leagues last season, was involved in Danny Welbeck's opener, as well as their second, and showed his trademark tenacity in midfield.

If he continues to produce those types of performances, then Chelsea could have a serious player on their hands as Enzo Fernandez looks set to leave Stamford Bridge. A natural replacement? Arguably.
