Nottingham Forest produced the worst corner routine we've ever seen vs Newcastle and it's gone viral

What on earth was this about?

Nottingham Forest produced one of the strangest corner routines we've seen during their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

Steve Cooper's side travelled to St. James' Park for their first Premier League game in 23 years on Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't a winning return but they did produce one of the contest's biggest talking points.

Forest had a corner at 1-0 down and decided to leave every single player outside the box as it was taken. Just watch the footage below and it'll all make sense.

As the corner is taken, five Forest players dart into the penalty area and attempt to challenge for the ball.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and his defenders looked confused as did everyone else inside the stadium.

Pope managed to catch the ball with ease after a poor delivery and it left everyone watching what on earth they'd just watched.

Safe to say it's one that needed a far better delivery and far better execution. The clip has gone viral and fans still don't fully understand what was attempted.

One person said: "It's like something I'd make on FIFA when I'm bored."

Another put: "Sunday League vibes I rate it."

A third tweeted: "What in the name of Ted Lasso is this?"

While someone put: "The moment I realised we're in for a long season."

The actual tactics were likely an attempt to disorganise the Magpies defence and leave them wondering who to mark and pick up.

England employed similar routines during the 2018 World Cup, with Harry Maguire at the far post playing an important role.

Forest started the game with six of their 12 new signings on the pitch, while Newcastle only included Pope from their new recruits.

Eddie Howe's men were dominant throughout and Forest failed to register a single shot on target.

They managed to keep Newcastle out until the 58th minute, when central defender Fabian Schar produced a sensational effort from the edge of the box.

He fired his effort in off the near post and there was nothing Dean Henderson could do about it.

Callum Wilson sealed all three points 12 minutes from time with a first time chip over Henderson and into the far corner.
