Werder Bremen midfielder Melvyn Lorenzen has been attacked outside his own home, forcing him to miss the first three weeks of pre-season with the German side.

The 21-year old suffered facial injuries in the incident, which happened on his doorstep. His attackers fled the scene before police arrived, while the player was taken to hospital and instructed not to train for three weeks.

On their official website, Bremen released a statement on the situation, with director of sport commenting on the events that had occurred.

He said:

Of course we are shocked by such an incident and we hope it gets resolved quickly

The Uganda international has so far made 14 appearances for Werder Bremen, following a transfer from Holstein Kiel in 2013. Here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery and can take part in his team's pre-season preparations soon.
