It seems as though Paris Saint-Germain have nipped in ahead of the likes of FC Barcelona and Manchester City to secure the services of Ajax sensation Frenkie De Jong.

The 21-year-old Dutch international is one of the most sought after prospects in world football following a series of sensational displays for both club and country.

Watch De Jong and you get the immediate feeling that he is a perfect player for the brand of football Barcelona and City player, but according to the Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, he has chosen to join French champions PSG.

It's said PSG officials met with the player's entourage to seal the deal - with De Telegraaf having photos of the meeting in question.

Ajax Sporting director Marc Overmars, who slapped the €75 million euros (£67 million) price tag on the midfielder, acknowledged the discussions in Amsterdam but said there is not final agreement as of yet and other clubs are still showing interest.

However, it is believed that Manchester City have "faded into the background" in regards to the pursuit of De Jong because of the Financial Fair Play investigation UEFA have opened against them - although that does seem strange given PSG having similar issues..

It is also stated that De Jong prefer's a move to Paris to not-so-sunny Manchester, even with the presence of Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

Should De Jong join PSG for the fee mentioned, the transfer would eclipse the Eredivisie record of £35 million - which is what Tottenham paid to land Davinson Sanchez from Ajax in 2017.

News of PSG swooping in comes after their star forward Kylian Mbappe urged the club to sign him just a few days ago.

"His vision of the game and quality of passes breaking the lines makes him very valuable," he told France Football.

"He's welcome at Paris! I put in a good word [for him], because he'd help us a lot."
