Barcelona want to hand Frenkie de Jong contract 'for life' which could end Man Utd interest forever

Barcelona want to hand Frenkie de Jong contract 'for life' which could end Man Utd interest forever

Frenkie de Jong was previously linked with a move to Manchester United

Barcelona are reportedly looking to hand midfielder Frenkie de Jong a lifetime contract.

Over the last few seasons, Dutchman De Jong has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League side Manchester United.

Two summers ago, it was reported that United made a couple of bids for the midfielder but ultimately, De Jong refused to leave Barcelona.

Now, it has been reported that Barcelona would like to hand a contract extension to De Jong.

According to Spanish news outlet SPORT, Barcelona will propose to renew practically for life.

However, it will require the club to make clear their commitments to the 26-year-old.

In addition, it has been claimed that the potential new deal will require an effort from De Jong as he is set to earn less money in the next two seasons.

De Jong is said to be very comfortable in Barcelona and the club value him as one of the best midfielders in world football, having already played a vital role this season under manager Xavi.

Ahead of the 23/24 season, De Jong admitted he wants to play for Barcelona for the rest of his career.

He told El Periodico: “I always wanted to be at Barca. In these first years we had not won the League, nor gone far in the Champions League. We had only won one Copa del Rey. To succeed at Barca I had a lot left.

“And I also saw that the team was improving that summer. High level players arrived. And that's why I wanted to continue. It is the club of my dreams and I want to be here all my life. I didn't want to leave suddenly.”

De Jong added: “The situation is what it is. Economically, Barca is not at its best moment. And they could get a lot of money for me. Maybe the club thought it was good to sell me and have that money. But I didn't want to leave. It was always clear to me. I did not want to. That's why I was very calm. I had decided.”
