The Spain international dominated the middle of the park alongside Fabinho who reverted back to his usual defensive midfield role.

And he nearly had an assist to show for his performance on Wednesday, creating an incredible chance for Salah.

On the counter-attack after defending a corner, the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich man played a gorgeous pass to his teammate.

He put the Egyptian forward clear on goal with an sublime acrobatic through ball.

Unfortunately for Thiago and the Reds, Salah failed to hit the back of the net - forcing a save from Peter Gulacsi.

Liverpool fans loved the pass and praised it on social media.,

One Twitter user wrote: "That pass so deserved a goal at the end."

A second tweeted: "But Thiago stifles our play... no other mid in our team nails this pass."

A third added: "F**k man if only Salah scored this.... F**king goal of the CENTURY."

Liverpool are through to the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Leipzig 4-0 on aggregate.

And speaking after the 2-0 victory in Budapest, Jurgen Klopp hit back at the Thiago critics.

He said: "Thiago was good, they were all good.

"When Naby (Keita) came on that was also good and it was helpful.

"I assume when you all look at Liverpool from Germany, people say it's (the problems) to do with Thiago or whatever - that's rubbish.

"For the players who were new, they always needed time to get used to our game plan but Thiago doesn't have that.

"But he improves week on week. It is not a short-term project, it is a long-term project and it was good.

"It is very fluid how we work together, the boys played some nice passes and Thiago had a great chance as well, I think he could have had a shot on goal but instead passed."

Thiago, who has been the subject of intense criticism this season, showed his influence as Liverpool returned to winning ways following back-to-back league defeats.
