Manchester City are predicted to beat fierce rivals Liverpool to the Premier League title by nine points, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side convincingly beat City in the title race last season with a staggering 18-point margin at the top of the table.

However, FiveThirtyEight now believes that the Reds will unsuccessfully defend their championship status in the current season.

Pep Guardiola's City are expected to amass 89 points en route to capturing the Premier League title.

City have received a 60 per cent prediction for winning the title, putting them well clear of Liverpool's 24 per cent.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have an 83 per cent chance of finishing in the top four and came second in the table with 80 points.

Chelsea, who beat Brighton 3-1 in their opening Premier League match, are now predicted to finish in third place with 70 points.

A previous supercomputer prediction had the Blues behind Manchester United in the race for top four.

United, who suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, are now in fourth place with 67 points.

Arsenal fall seven points short of United in the race for top four and have to settle for fifth place, according to the predictions.
