"Looking like a Sunday league player getting twisted inside out!" one fan tweeted about Manchester United summer signing Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire was left red-faced after his failed challenge on a Partizan player had fans comparing him to a Sunday League player.

Manchester United were in Europa League action on Thursday and managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Partizan thanks to an Anthony Martial penalty.

But fans slammed Maguire when he was made to look like an average player against Partizan in the second half.

Partizan midfielder Seydouba Soumah was up against the 26-year-old United defender, who completely misread the fake shot and was left helpless.

Maguire watched on as the 28-year-old Soumah went through on net before firing off a tame effort straight at Sergio Romero.

But the mistake from United's marquee summer signing was picked up by fans, who flocked to social media to compare him to a Sunday League player.

Maguire became the most expensive defender in the world when United splashed out a whopping £80m to capture him from Leicester City.

The former Foxes defender has had an instant impact at Old Trafford alongside fellow United signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, Maguire was heavily criticised by Rafael van der Vaart during United's 1-1 draw with Liverpool after he compared him to Sunday League defenders.

United, who have struggled to maintain consistency this season, secured their first away win on Thursday since March.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slammed his side's defending against Partizan by suggesting that it was "non-existent" in the second half.

The United boss explained: "In the second half, I thought we dug in really well in the box.

"They played well and made us defend too deep -- I'm not happy with the defending at the front.

"It's been one of our strengths this season, but it was non-existent in the second half.

"It needs sorting out."

United are top of Group L and hold a two-point lead over second-placed AZ Alkmaar, who thrashed Astana 6-0 at home.

The Red Devils will now return to Premier League action on Sunday when they travel to Norwich.
