Harry Maguire has written his name in Premier League folklore with a record-breaking goal for Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

After squeezing past Coventry City on penalties in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final, the Red Devils went 1-0 down to bottom club Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

Andre Onana produced an absolute howler, passing straight to Jayden Bogle, who punished the Cameroonian by slotting past him.

United levelled matters just before half-time through Maguire, who scored for the second consecutive game for the first time since joining the 13-time Premier League winners.

And in doing so, Maguire has etched his new in history. He scored the 1,085th goal of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign - which means a new record for the most goals in a 20-team, 38-game season.

There are still plenty of games left to add to the tally - 45 to be exact - but it is a fine individual achievement for Maguire.

United were hoping his heroics would spur them on but shortly after half-time and the visitors were back in the net after Ben Brereton-Diaz found the net.

Bruno Fernandes levelled matters with a penalty that was on by Maguire and then bagged a second to complete the turnaround, before Rasmus Hojlund sealed the win.

It's the first time in history that there has been average of more than three goals per game in a Premier League season.

1084 goals were scored in the 2022/23 season, while the 2018/19, 2021/22 and 2011/12 campaigns make up the top five for the most strikes across the board.

At the current rate, there will be 1,231 goals in the current campaign.
