The Premier League have explained why Roberto Firmino's goal against Aston Villa was controversially ruled out on Saturday.

Aston Villa took the lead through Trézéguet and Firmino thought he had equalised for Liverpool. But VAR chalked the goal off as replays adjudged the Brazilian to be in an offside position, despite appearing to be in an onside position.

The Premier League have since released a statement on Firmino's VAR controversy at Villa Park by saying his armpit was offside.

"Liverpool's Roberto Firmino was flagged offside before putting the ball in the net against Aston Villa and the decision was confirmed by VAR," the statement reads.

"The red line signifies Firmino and was aligned to his armpit, which was marginally ahead of the last Villa defender."

Needless to say, Premier League claiming Firmino's armpit was the reason behind his disallowed goal sparked social media into overdrive.

"So Firmino's armpit was offside Ffs," one social media user wrote.

A second Tweeted: "Firmino is lethal with his armpit."

Another added: "You really can't make this up. They said Firmino's armpit was offside."

Liverpool went on to beat Villa 2-1 thanks to two late goals from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane in injury time.
