Manchester United Could Set A New Premier League Record This Weekend

The Red Devils could break an amazing landmark this weekend.

In the Premier League era one team has been a near constant when it comes to success and whilst Manchester United might not be the force they once were they're on the verge of some very impressive history.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson the Red Devils won the Premier League 13 times in just 21 seasons of the league. Next on the list of title winners is Chelsea with four, that's how dominant 'Fergie's' team was.

Since then United have struggled to return to title winning form under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and most recently under Jose Mourinho.

Checkout our video on the players Fergie missed out on:

However, after last weekend's 3-0 win over current champions over Leicester City, the Manchester side have put themselves on the verge of an incredible record.

Should United pick up all three points against Watford on Saturday afternoon then they would be the first team in the Premier League to reach 2000 points:

So since 1992 United have totted up 1997 points, that's roughly 81 points per season (based on 24.5 seasons of the Premier league to date).

Just to put an exclamation mark on how impressive the points total is their closest rivals in the all time Premier League record is Arsenal but the Gunners are 203 points short of the top spot.

Chelsea are in third place another 39 points behind Arsenal and Liverpool are a further 105 points behind the Blues in the all time Premier League record.

Of course football started a long time before 1992 and the all time top tier table for English football reads slightly differently.

On that table Liverpool lead the way, despite not winning the league in 27 years, on 5483 points. Arsenal are again second on 5445 points followed by Everton on 5266 and then United on 5226.

When United took on Watford earlier in the season they were embarrassed in a 3-1 loss away from home but they get the chance for revenge this weekend.

As well as the record a win for United could take them into fifth befoe Liverpool's late kick off.

Will United get the record this weekend?

Fergie's biggest regret

Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't have many regrets at Manchester United after his 27-year tenure at the club. He won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues, so there's not too much he can look back on and think "what if?".

However the 74-year old does have one career regret and that is not been able to take his United side to the Champions League in 2002, which was held at Hampden Park in his home-city of Glasgow.

Check out our video on the bad blood between Manchester United and Liverpool:

United lost out to Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final and Real Madrid went on to win the competition that year, with help from a stunning volley from Zinedine Zidane.

Ferguson regrets failing to manage in a Champions League final at Hampden Park.

Speaking at an event in Glasgow for the launch of the UEFA Euro 2020 logo a couple of days back, he said:

"The one that I really regret is not taking Man United there [Hampden] in 2002 when they hosted the Champions League final. The whole build-up was about taking Manchester United back to the final in Glasgow, but we lost to Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final. We were a wee bit unlucky - we ran out of time. The referee couldn't understand my time and his time."

The former Aberdeen boss reveals that he laments the missed opportunity in Glasgow so much more because he feels he may have jinxed it when he looked at potential hotels to stay at in Glasgow beforehand.

He added:

"I always guard against complacency. It's a disease. But in the build-up to Hampden that season David Gill says 'I think you should go up to Glasgow and check out hotels because you know better than any of us'.

So I went and checked out some hotels and was at one between East Kilbride and Strathaven. It would have been ideal for us. It was the perfect hotel.

"On the drive back down to Glasgow I said: 'I don't like it. I should never have done this'. We lost the semi-final. But that's life."

What do you think Fergie's second biggest regret would be?
