Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore rushed to hospital to see a fan who was "ambushed" in a bar in Naples on Tuesday night.

A Liverpool supporter, named Steven Allen, collapsed at half-time due to "significant blood loss" following an alleged ambush by a group of Napoli ultras.

Moore paid a personal visit to the fan to check on his well-being after fans were attacked before Liverpool's Champions League match versus Napoli.

Travelling supporters were reportedly surrounded by men on scooters and attacked by belts during the day.

Moore put Liverpool supporters at ease by vowing not to leave the fan's side until he's in a good condition.

"I'm at the hospital with Steven right now. We will not leave him until we are comfortable that he's fine, so can everyone stop worrying for now. Trying to get him seen by a doctor, but there's a distinct lack of urgency here from the police and medical staff," he wrote on Twitter.

He then Tweeted an update on the incident: "Update to this. The hospital staff and the police have now helped Steven and been very cooperative. He's been seen and will be monitored throughout the night. He asked me to thank everyone for their concern."

Merseyside Police confirmed that two supporters were assaulted prior to the European fixture in Italy.

"We can confirm two Liverpool fans were reported to have been assaulted in Naples earlier today (Tuesday 17 September)," the statement read.

"At around 6pm local time (5pm GMT), it was reported a number of males on scooters approached the fans at a bar in the city before assaulting them.

"Two men from the UK, aged 26 and 46, sustained superficial cuts and grazes to the head and were treated at the scene before continuing to attend the match."

Liverpool went on to lose their opening Champions League group stage match. They lost 2-0 to the Serie A side.

Second-half goals from Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente secured a home win for the Italian outfit.
