Lionel Messi has lifted the lid on his situation at Barcelona in a new interview.

The Blaugrana captain and talisman sat down with La Sexta's Jordi Évole for an hour-long chat that will be broadcast on December 27.

It is the first proper interview Messi has given since he reluctantly announced to GOAL he would be staying put as he did not want to take legal action against his beloved Barca in the summer.

In a whirlwind week, Messi had previously handed in a transfer request and felt he was able to leave for free having felt his release clause had expired.

The club and La Liga stated that it was not the case despite the extended campaign due to COVID-19.

Even after deciding to stay for another year under new manager Ronald Koeman, there has still been plenty of speculation regarding Messi's future at the Nou Camp - with PSG said to be in pole position.

However, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner now appears to be hinting that he could stay beyond the expiration of his contract in June 2021.

"The truth is that today I'm fine," Messi told La Sexta, as per Catalunya Ràdio.

"It's true that I had a very bad time in the summer.

"It came from before. What happened before the summer, because of how the season ended, the burofax and all that ... Then I dragged it a bit at the beginning of the season.

"But today I'm fine and I feel like fighting seriously for everything that lies ahead, excited.

"And excited. I know that the club is going through a difficult time, at club level and team, and everything that surrounds Barcelona becomes difficult but I'm looking forward to it."

Messi and Barcelona haven't been at their usual standards this term but the Argentine did reach a historic milestone in the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend

The 33-year-old notched his sixth league goal of the season but more importantly it saw him equal Pele's record of 643 goals for one club.

Brazilian legend Pele did it for Santos back in the day and congratulated Messi with a post on Instagram.

In response, Messi wrote back: "Thank you very much for your loving message, @pele. The truth was that it was nice to see what those words mean coming from someone as great as you were. I send you a big hug!!"
