Wesley Sneijder has been branded as the 'man who was robbed of the Ballon d'Or' as a fan produced a brilliant Twitter thread on the Dutchman's snub.

Sneijder, 36, was widely considered as one of the best players in world football during his phenomenal season for both club and season.

The Dutch former midfielder played an instrumental role in Jose Mourinho's treble-winning Inter Milan side during the 2009-10 season.

And Bert van Marwijk benefited from Sneijder's fine form as the Netherlands reached the final of the 2010 World Cup to face Spain in Johannesburg.

Sneijder, who retired from football in 2019, secured a place in the FIFA FIFPro World XI alongside Barcelona legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi.

However, fans were shocked when the former Inter maestro was left out of the top three of the Ballon d'Or podium.

One fan has now made a comprehensive thread to explain exactly why Sneijder was 'robbed' of France Football's prized award.

Xavi admitted that he understood the anger in Italy at the time after Sneijder was snubbed for the Ballon d'Or.

The 41-year-old Spaniard told Sport in 2010: "For me, beating Real Madrid is at the top of my list, as they are one of our biggest rivals.

"It was a fantastic thing, especially the scoreline.

"A lot of people don't support us for doing so well in both the league and Champions League. They cannot wait to lay the boots into us.

"As for Sneijder, I know that in Italy they are angry because he is not one of the finalists. I can only agree with them. The Dutchman has had a fantastic year."

Lionel Messi was named the 2010 Ballon d'Or winner after receiving 22.65 per cent of the vote.

Iniesta finished second with 17.36 per cent and Xavi came third with 16.48 per cent, while Sneijder ranked fourth with 14.48 per cent of the vote.
