A Barcelona fan produced a comprehensive thread defending Lionel Messi from the 'harsh criticism' that he has received in the Champions League.

And Messi was heavily criticised for his showing in the first-leg round-of-16 clash, with one fan producing a thread to highlight his 'disasterclass performance.'

Twitter user Qam has now launched a staunch defence for the 32-year-old Argentine forward and spotlighted "all those times when the club needed him and he delivered."

Barcelona dropped points last weekend after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to fierce rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos left-back Marcelo produced a stunning last-ditch tackle to deny Messi from scoring deep into the second half.
