Why Martin Tyler missed the Premier League trophy lift for the first time in 20 years

Why Martin Tyler missed the Premier League trophy lift for the first time in 20 years

Martin Tyler has been a mainstay in Sky Sports' Premier League coverage, spearheading the commentary team since 1992.

Martin Tyler is a legend in football, heading the Sky Sports commentary team since the Premier League's inception in 2012 .

Martin Tyler has been a mainstay in Sky Sports' coverage over the years, with his most memorable moment coming in 2012 when Sergio Aguero famously won the league for Manchester City in stoppage time.

With a sense of deja vu for Premier League fans, Manchester City lifted their fifth Premier League title in six years following a pitch invasion, but there was something missing: Martin Tyler was not commentating on it.

Rob Hawthorne commentated on City's record-equalling third Premier League title in a row, as Tyler stayed at home to nurse a sore throat, though he is set to return for the final day's fixtures.

It was the first time in 20 years that Tyler hadn't commentated the title celebrations, sparking rumours of his future at Sky and a possible retirement.

Jeff Stelling, another Sky Sports icon, is making his final bow this weekend - following on from Graeme Souness' departure from the Sky Sports team as well.

Tyler has also upset a number of fans this season, firstly being accused of ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown of being bias against the Gunners amidst their end-of-season collapse, and he was also accused of making racist comments by Spurs fans as he compared a Son Heung-Min challenge to martial arts.

Despite all of this, it is expected that the veteran commentator will continue at Sky beyond 2022/23, as he has recently entered his fourth decade as a Premier League commentator, and Sky are more than keen to keep their legend.

Martin Tyler's infamous commentary on the famous Sergio Aguero goal has gone down in history as one of the most iconic pieces of commentary ever, with some City fans even admitting that they have tattoos of his words on their bodies.

In 2003, Tyler was voted as the Premier League's 'Commentator of the Decade' to mark the 10th anniversary of the league, and more famously, he was a commentator for the FIFA video game franchise from 2005-2020.
