Lisandro Martinez left the pitch in tears after suffering an injury as Manchester United threw away a 2-0 lead against Sevilla in the Europa League.

Heading into their Europa League quarter-final clash against Sevilla, United were looking to continue their winning run after beating Everton and Brentford in their last two outings.

Sevilla meanwhile have been threatened by relegation after a horrendous start to the 22/23 campaign which led to Jorge Sampaoli’s dismissal.

On Thursday night, Erik ten Hag’s men made a frighteningly quick start under the lights at Old Trafford.

Two goals in the space of seven minutes from January signing Marcel Sabitzer gave United a 2-0 lead after 21 minutes.

Sevilla nearly got back in the game just before half time but David de Gea produced a brilliant save to deny Tanguy Nianzou.

In the second half, United looked comfortable but Sevilla threw in a spanner in the works in the 83rd minute after Tyrell Malacia switched off at the back post.

As a result, Jesus Navas was able to cross the ball, which was deflected into the back of the net by a combination of Malacia and De Gea.

However, things got worse for United and in particular for Lisandro Martinez, who went down injured.

As he was helped off the pitch, the Argentine appeared to be in tears as he looked emotional.

Fans were quick to react on social media.

One said: “Yeah Martinez is finished you can tell by his reaction.”

Another tweeted: “Martinez season over, definitely achiles gone.”

A third fan added: “You know it’s serious if Martinez is in tears,”

Someone else wrote: “Well that's a disaster. Martinez in tears with what looks like a horrible injury, and Varane off, all after missing Rashford too. That will mean the season is over.”

Whilst a fifth commented: “Oh no... Martinez. Get well soon, Lisandro. I'm so sad for him, he's in tears man.”

Sevilla then inflicted more damage as they managed to nick a late equaliser in the 93rd minute, Youssef En Nesyri's header was deflected into the net by Harry Maguire.

Now, the agonising wait for a diagnosis begins whilst United are also sweating over the fitness of several key players such as Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford.

United will take on Nottingham Forest on Sunday before travelling to Spain to play Sevilla in the second leg.
