Liverpool have completed their fourth sale of the transfer window, with young defender Tom Clayton joining Swindon Town on a permanent deal.

The versatile 21-year-old, who can play in defence and midfield, has moved to the League Two club for an undisclosed fee.

Clayton never made a senior appearance for Liverpool, but skippered their under-23s to Lancashire FA Senior Cup glory last season.

Speaking to the Robins’ website, he said: “I’m so pleased to join Swindon."

"Having spoken to a number of people about the club before signing I knew this was the place I wanted to play my football and take the next step in my career, so it wasn’t a hard decision at all.

“I’m itching to get started and push myself hard here. I want to become a first-team regular and show the fans what I’m about.

“This is a great club with superb ambition, and I really want to be part of this exciting project moving forward.”

Clayton is the fourth player to leave the club on a permanent transfer this summer, joining Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Neco Williams on the departure list.

There, of course, were several players released also, with Divock Origi, Loris Karius, Sheyi Ojo, Ben Woodburn, Luis Longstaff, Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Sean Wilson departing the club without a fee.

Mane’s high-profile move to Bayern Munich was completed last month, while the long-term negotiations for Minamino and Williams were concluded more recently.

The Senegal international won the African Cup of Nations with his country in the early months of the year, whilst also qualifying for the World Cup at the expense of Mohamed Salah’s Egypt.

Williams will also be featuring at Qatar 2022 with Wales, and his exploits with both his country and in the Championship with Fulham earned him a £17m move to Nottingham Forest.

Minamino meanwhile will be lighting up Monaco and hoping to challenge for Ligue 1.

There will likely be more departures from the Reds as the new season edges closer.
