Jamie Carragher says Liverpool star Joel Matip should 'move on' this summer

He's been at the club for seven years.

With Liverpool currently in the process of a major squad overhaul, club legend Jamie Carragher says one fan favourite should be "moved on" this summer after seven years at the club.

Liverpool have already confirmed James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita will become free agents when their contracts expire at the end of the month.

Arthur Melo has also returned to Juventus after his disastrous loan spell at Anfield, while the likes of Fabio Carvalho, Caoimhin Kelleher and Nat Phillips may seek to leave Anfield this summer in search of regular first-team football.

Liverpool will look to make a number of signings this summer, most notably in the midfield department – with Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister set to become the first new arrival this summer.

Fabrizio Romano claims the Argentina international has agreed personal terms on a five-year deal with Liverpool, who are expected to trigger a release clause in his contract with Brighton in the coming days.

He could be followed by further midfield signings, with Borussia Monchengladbach's Manu Kone, Nice's Khephren Thuram and Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch on the radar of the Merseyside club.

Further reinforcements could be made in defence, too, particularly if Phillips is allowed to leave this summer.

Liverpool have already been linked with a number of left-sided centre-backs including Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven and Chelsea's Levi Colwill, who has impressed this season on loan at Brighton.

Carragher: Liverpool should consider selling Matip

Liverpool legend Carragher believes fan favourite Joel Matip could be sold this summer to make way for a new defender.

"I look at the defence and I think Joel Matip now has got a year to go [on his contract]. If you got £10m, whatever the price may be, it's probably right to move on," Carragher told The Redmen TV, as reported by This Is Anfield.

"I do think we need a left-sided defender, a left-footed centre-back. A lot of teams have them, we don't.

"A left-sided player would add something.

"Rather than getting a left-back, because I don't think we will, if we are going to continue with this formation now, [it should be] buying someone in that area, a centre-back who can do the full-back role.

"I definitely think [Liverpool should sign] a left-sided centre-back who can do that left-back job."

Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 and has gone on to make 187 appearances for the club, scoring 11 times.

He has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and UEFA Super Cup at Anfield, playing a key role in the club's success under Jurgen Klopp.

But he has also struggled with injuries throughout his time on Merseyside and has now fallen behind Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order, with the France international now the preferred centre-back partner for Virgil van Dijk.
