Liverpool could cost potential buyers an astonishing amount after FSG 'put the Premier League club up for sale'

Liverpool have reportedly been put up for sale by its current owners, FSG. How much is the club currently worth?

Liverpool Football Club has reportedly been put up for sale by its current owners, Fenway Sports Group. How much is the club worth, and how much could potential buyers expect to pay?

Reports emerged that FSG were looking to sell the club shortly after the Reds drew Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 draw.

David Ornstein of The Athletic claims that FSG have put Liverpool up for sale, and that a 'sale deck has been produced for interested parties'.

That was followed by a statement by Liverpool's owners, which reads: "FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool.

"FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.

"FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch."

If a sale does go through, how much is the club currently worth?

Liverpool: How much is the club worth?

According to Forbes, as of May 2022, Liverpool are worth $4.45 billion (around £3.6 billion in May, £3.9 billion in November 2022).

That makes them the fourth-richest football club in the world, behind Real, Barcelona and Man United.

The same source claims that the club's value has seen a nine per cent rise compared to the previous year. Therefore, only the richest investors would have a realistic chance of purchasing Liverpool.

How much could Liverpool be purchased for?

Whilst it is impossible, certainly at this stage, to put a figure on a potential sale price for Liverpool, we can reference the sale of Chelsea earlier this year.

A consortium led by US businessman Todd Boehly bought the club from Roman Abramovich for a fee of £4.25 billion. It was the most expensive sale of an English club.

Given that Liverpool's overall value is lower than the above figure, it would be interesting to see whether the sale of the club would break beyond the richest sale in English football history - if it is sold at all.
