Jurgen Klopp could hand debut to "exceptional" Liverpool player against Napoli

Jurgen Klopp could hand debut to "exceptional" Liverpool player against Napoli

One of Liverpool's summer signings could be in line for a club debut.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could give summer signing Calvin Ramsay his club debut in the Champions League against Napoli on Tuesday.

The German has been forced into making several changes to his defence in recent weeks.

Joe Gomez deputised for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back for two games after the latter picked up an injury in the 3-2 Premier League defeat to Arsenal earlier in October. He then moved to centre-back after injuries to Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.

In addition, Kostas Tsimikas replaced Andrew Robertson when the Scotland international missed five games, including the Arsenal loss, due to a knee injury.

Now, ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Napoli this week, Klopp may once more have to make adjustments to his defence.

Calvin Ramsay to make Liverpool debut?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Klopp confirmed that Konate is in contention to return to the side following injury, and could even start the game at centre-back.

Meanwhile, he also made some noteworthy comments on Ramsay, who has featured on several occasions for the U21s this month following his recovery from injury.

Klopp said: "With Calvin, we have to see.

"That makes, now, no sense if we have to change a lot of players to bring Calvin in for his first senior [appearance]. Coming on, yeah, for sure. These kinds of things should be possible."

He later added: "So we have to wait a little bit, but then in the moment, when we know who is ready, then we will make sure that these boys are ready for a proper fight."

From the comments made by the Reds boss, it appears that Ramsay is also in contention for a debut - although perhaps only from the bench.

Given that Alexander-Arnold was substituted early during Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Leeds at the weekend as he continues his return from injury, it would appear likely that the England international will start against Napoli.

For Ramsay, any gametime at Anfield on Tuesday would represent his first senior appearance since April 30, when he completed 90 minutes for Aberdeen against Dundee.

The 19-year-old left the Dons to join Liverpool in the summer for a fee of £6.5 million - but injury has prevented him from making a senior appearance thus far.

He has, however, featured for the U21s, and scored in their 3-0 win over West Ham on Saturday. A senior debut may not be far away for a player Klopp described as 'exceptional' earlier in October.
