"Going to be a star" - Pundit raves over Liverpool youngster and makes David Beckham claim

Pundit Phil Thompson is backing Fabio Carvalho to have a big first season at Liverpool.

Speaking to Off the Ball, Thompson revealed he has “seen enough of him at Fulham” to be convinced he’s going to be a star for Klopp's side.

Thompson believes to be a top player you “you need to have it a la David Beckham and that’s what Carvalho has.”

As such, the pundit has no doubt that Carvalho is “going to be a star” for the Merseyside club.

Carvalho featured regularly for the Reds during pre-season and came off the bench during the club’s Premier League opener at the 19-year-old’s former club Fulham on Saturday.

Thus far in a Liverpool shirt, he has been seen operating from the left-wing, cutting in onto his stronger right foot.

At this stage in his career, this is where Carvalho is most comfortable operating for the Reds, but many hope he will move to a midfield role as he continues to develop.

The Liverpool midfield is going to need some intensive surgery over the course of the next few seasons with many of Jürgen Klopp’s most trusted generals in his engine room ageing.

And if Carvalho can develop in such a manner which enables him to occupy one of those roles within the midfield three, it’d be very useful.

Until then though, early indicators suggest he’ll be able to provide requisite quality to operate in a more advanced role for the time being.

Luis Diaz, who most frequently operates off the left flank for the Reds, may need time out of the limelight during his first full season in the Premier League.

And in such circumstances, Jürgen Klopp will want to be able to rely on Carvalho to come in and deputise for the Colombian.

And according to Phil Thomspon, he’ll be more than good enough to do just that.
