Liverpool fans are divided on whether they would want a 'state' to buy their club

Liverpool fans are divided on whether they would want a 'state' to buy their club

Owners Fenway Sports Group has been in charge of Liverpool since 2010.

It was reported on Monday afternoon that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group(FSG) is inviting offers to buy the club, putting the club’s future into the unknown.

According to The Athletic, FSG has put Liverpool up for sale and a full sales presentation has been produced for interested parties.

A statement by FSG reads: “There have been a number of recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.

“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.

“FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”

Since the news broke, Liverpool fans have been reacting all over social media. With the club’s estimated worth to be around £3.5 billion, the reality of a ‘state’ ownership could be on the horizon.

When asked about potential state owners, there seem to be differing views within the fan base.

One fan said: “Feel like Saudi owners would tarnish what the club stands for. Yes I get all billionaires have some sort of blood money but being run by a state that openly infringes on human rights doesn’t seem to align with Liverpool.”

Another fan tweeted: “It's such a shame that FSG wants to sell, I can't see us getting a better group to own us. They have invested a lot in the club with 2 new stands and redevelopment of the training grounds so whoever does buy us will be getting a solid bass to work from.”

A third fan added: “The big issue with oil state ownership, apart from the obvious moral one, is these clubs are effectively at the mercy of international political relationships. The future of these clubs are at stake. We’ve seen that already with Chelsea.”

It remains to be seen whether FSG will sell Liverpool in the near future.
